K9AY design & Phased array
This is a short technical article about K9AY loop design and simulations. You can select some size or download MMANA files and play with your own one :) You can try different shapes, height and load resistance. You can better understand how it works and how you can build it better.

Dimensions for variants for 160m - 40m
Universal small variant
160m and 80m variant
- MMANA file of my small design for 160m and 80m
Very small variant for 160m - 40m
- - MMANA 40m file
- - results 160m for Rload resistor 390 Ohm, Conduct 5 mS/m ::: G = -38dBi F/B = 18dB EL = 31°
- - "GAIN" on 160m is very low - preamp is necessary :)
- - results 80m for Rload resistor 390 Ohm, Conduct 5 mS/m ::: G = -27dBi F/B = 17dB EL = 34°
- results 40m for Rload resistor 470 Ohm, Conduct 5 mS/m ::: G = -16dBi F/B = 21dB EL = 38°
Optimized for 160m
- - MMANA 160m file
- - results for Rload resistor 470 Ohm, Conduct 5 mS/m ::: G = -25dBi F/B = 25dB EL = 32°
Optimized for 80m
- - MMANA 80m file
- - results for Rload resistor 570 Ohm, Conduct 5 mS/m ::: G = -13dBi F/B = 21dB EL = 37°
Optimized for 40m
- - MMANA 40m file
- - results for Rload resistor 470 Ohm, Conduct 5 mS/m ::: G = -16dBi F/B = 21dB EL = 38°
Loop connection
- - this is very important thing which has effect on final antenna parameters
- - if you end lower part of loops as close to ground as possible, you can obtain better F/B
- - install RF feeder box higher - protect from snow, water etc. and connect loops with twisted wires from loops to screws
effect of low part of loops
Place loops as low as possible. GREEN = on ground, RED = 0.5m, BLUE = 0.8m
K9AY in phased array
There are examples of phased arrays. In the broadside and End-fire configuration. Phasing into the array could help you to obtain better parameters.
Single K9AY loop
There is example of the single loop at 160m
Broadside 2el K9AY
Broadside array reduces azimuth antenna pattern. There is example for space S = 30m
Broadside 4el K9AY
Another simulation for the broadside array. There is example for 4el K9AY space S = 30m - some more optimization could be done there.
End-Fire 2el K9AY
End-Fire array could help you with F/B and nulling some signals. There could be different phasing angles to do it. You can find some calculations also at 2el End-Fire beverage page
